Diploma for German Language - The Goethe-Zertifikat

Passing the Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Fit in Deutsch 1 examination proves that you can make yourself understood in simple German. The examination requires a basic knowledge of German. It corresponds to level one (A1) on the six-level scale of competence laid down in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
After passing the examination, you will be able to do the following, for example:

  • understand simple questions, notices and phone messages as well as information on the radio about an everyday situation and in brief conversations,
  • gather the main information from short written messages, advertisements, descriptions, letters and simple newspaper articles,
  • write brief personal messages,
  • introduce yourself in a conversation and answer questions about yourself,
  • ask and reply to simple questions in a conversation on topics affecting you,
  • make common requests and formulate questions in everyday situations, and reply or respond to these.

The Goethe-Zertifikat A1:
Start Deutsch 1 requires very basic language skills. The examination corresponds to level one (A1) on the six-level scale of competence laid down in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

After passing the examination, you will be able to do the following, for example:

  • understand what you hear in everyday situations, such as simple questions, instructions and messages, as well as messages on an answerphone, public announcements and brief conversations,
  • obtain relevant information from short written messages, public notices and classified advertisements,
  • state and understand figures, quantities, times and prices,
  • fill in personal details and basic information on forms,
  • write brief personal messages,
  • introduce yourself in a conversation and answer simple personal questions,
  • formulate and respond to common everyday queries and requests.

Recognition:

The Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1 can be used by spouses as proof of the German language skills that are required for them to be reunified with their partners in Germany. Passing the Goethe-Zertifikat A2: Fit in Deutsch 2 examination proves that you can make yourself understood in simple German. The examination corresponds to level two (A2) on the six-level scale of competence laid down in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

After passing the examination, you will be able to do the following, for example:

  • understand simple questions, notices and phone messages as well as information on the radio about an everyday situation and in brief conversations,
  • gather the main information from short written messages, advertisements, descriptions, letters and simple newspaper articles,
  • write brief personal messages,
  • introduce yourself in a conversation and answer questions about yourself,

The Goethe-Zertifikat A2
Start Deutsch 2 calls for elementary language skills. The examination corresponds to level two (A2) on the six-level scale of competence laid down in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. After passing the examination you will be able to do the following, for example:

  • understand the main content of everyday conversations as well as brief radio announcements or phone messages,
  • obtain the most important information from short newspaper articles, everyday advertisements and public notice boards,
  • fill in ordinary forms in shops or at banks or government offices,
  • write messages about your immediate situation,
  • introduce yourself and exchange personal details in a conversation,
  • ask and answer questions in conversations about everyday topics,
  • agree on something or make arrangements in everyday conversation.

Zertifikat Deutsch für den Beruf
Corresponds to level four (B2) on the six-level scale of competence laid down in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and calls for an independent command of the language. After passing the examination, you will be able to do the following, for example:

  • make yourself understood appropriately in writing and verbally and react appropriately in everyday work situations
  • understand simple texts and draft routine correspondence relating to everyday corporate life. Recognition: The examination is very widely recognized in trade and industry. We also offer interested companies our ‘Testservice Deutsch für den Beruf’.

The Goethe-Zertifikat B2
Requires advanced language skills. The examination corresponds to level four (B2) on the six-level scale of competence laid down in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. After passing the examination, you will be able to do the following, for example:

  • follow the main content of specific and abstract topics and obtain relevant information from them (i.e. radio broadcasts),
  • understand a wide range of texts, both shorter simple texts (such as advertisements) and longer, more complex factual texts, commentaries and reports,
  • express yourself clearly and in a structured way in writing on the subject of complex matters and also correct mistakes in texts written by other people,
  • give clearly structured oral comments on general subjects and topics of particular interest to you,
  • take an active part in discussions on subjects you know about, taking up a position and presenting your own point of view.

The TestDaF
As a language examination at advanced level, it covers levels B2 to C1 of the six-level scale of competence laid down in the Common European Framework of Reference. The TestDaF exam is the language qualification that facilitates admission to university and is recognized by every university in Germany. No specialist knowledge is required. By successfully completing your TestDaF, you prove that you can:

  • find important items of information in short texts of different types,
  • understand details and complete statements in journalistic and scientific texts that relate to scientific or socio-political issues,
  • obtain detailed information in everyday situations,
  • follow interviews or dialogues on study-related or general scientific topics,
  • understand presentations on scientific topics,
  • draft your own well-structured and understandable text and present arguments,
  • describe, summarize and compare data,
  • adopt a justified position in discussions and conversations, weigh up alternatives and also make hypotheses.

Recognition
If you have successfully completed all four partial examinations at TestDaF level 4, the certification you will then obtain is valid as a language qualification for admission to any university in Germany. The TestDaF language examination is also internationally recognized proof of your knowledge of German for scientific projects and academic professions.

Locations, prices, dates and enrolment
The TestDaF exam can be sat at licensed test centres such as the various locations of the Goethe-Institut (GI), DAAD editorial offices, universities or language schools. There are currently around 390 test centres in 80 countries. You can find a test centre close to you via the TestDaF-Institut website. The TestDaF is part of the GI’s examination portfolio. You must pay an examination fee for the TestDaF. Enquire about the exact price at your local test centre.

You can participate in the TestDaF on six fixed dates per year throughout the world. Special dates apply in the People’s Republic of China; registration takes place at the National Education Examination Authority. In all other countries, you have to register for the TestDaF in writing at a test centre. You can obtain a registration form from the test centre or from the TestDaF-Institut’s website.

Development
The tasks of the TestDaF have been developed by the TestDaF-Institut, which is an institution run by the Gesellschaft für Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung e.V. (Society for Academic Study Preparation and Test Development, a registered association). The supporters of the institute are, among others, the Hochschulrektorenkonferenz (German Rectors’ Conference), the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (German Academic Exchange Service) and the Goethe-Institut.

The Goethe-Zertifikat C1
The Goethe-Zertifikat C1 calls for very advanced language skills. It corresponds to level five (C1) on the six-level scale of competence laid down in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

After passing the examination, you will be able to do the following, for example: * easily understand relatively long radio talks and radio programmes, * understand a wide range of written texts, including longer, more complex factual texts, commentaries and reports, * express yourself clearly and logically in essays on complex issues, choosing the right kind of expression to appeal to the reader, * verbally express yourself spontaneously and fluently, state your own opinions, formulate your thoughts and views precisely and make detailed contributions of your own.

Recognition

At many German universities and further-education institutions, foreign applicants with a Goethe-Zertifikat C1 are exempted from the language entrance test.

Beginning 01.01.2012 the Goethe-Zertifikat C2: Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom will replace three exams currently in use: the Goethe-Zertifikat: Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung (ZOP), the Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom (KDS) and the Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom (GDS).

The Goethe-Zertifikat C2 - Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom
The Goethe-Zertifikat C2 - Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom requires extremely advanced language skills and documents the sixth and highest level – C2 – on the six-level competency scale described in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. By passing this exam you demonstrate you can, for example:

  • understand everything in German that you read and hear effortlessly
  • summarize information presented to you from a variety of sources, written and spoken, and, in doing so, synthesize correlating arguments as well as explanations
  • organically express yourself in a fluent and precise manner and articulate the finer nuances of complex arguments.

Recognition

The Goethe-Institut’s certificates are recognized worldwide and are highly regarded by employers and further-education institutions as proof of language competancy. The Goethe-Zertifikat C2: GDS – as with the three exams for level C2 used up until now - allows foreign students to be admitted to colleges and universities in Germany. Certificates issued in connection with the ZOP, KDS and GDS exams will maintain their validity.

BULATS Deutsch-Test für den Beruf
BULATS Deutsch-Test für den Beruf is suitable for anyone seeking work on the international job market. BULATS assesses occupational language skills in 60 minutes. Test results and a report on your proficiency level are available immediately after taking the test. You can take the test at one of our test sites around the world. Implementation of BULATS is still ongoing, so not all test sites are able to offer the test yet. Please write or phone your local test site beforehand to check availability. BULATS. This is how it works: BULATS is a computerized test. Advanced technology allows evaluation of your language skills quickly and precisely.

All participants begin the test at the same level. Based on the test-taker’s answer, the BULATS program chooses the next question, and so on. This allows the difficulty level to automatically adjust to the language skills of the test-taker.

BULATS is in compliance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Test Sites, Fees, Schedule and Registration
The test can be taken in Germany as well as at Goethe-Instituts and Goethe Centers around the world and at our partner testing sites. Implementation of BULATS is still ongoing, so not all test sites are able to offer the test yet. Please write or phone your local test site beforehand to check availability.

For Companies - BULATS is especially suitable for companies that want to check the language skills of job applicants quickly and precisely, or to identify employees with the language skills for international operations.

BULATS is an internationally recognized and flexible online test. It can be taken either at one of our test sites worldwide or on-site at your company. Test results are available right after the test is done.

Development
The Goethe-Institut, the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, the Alliance Française and the Universidad de Salamanca developed this computer-based test in collaboration. The test is known internationally under the name BULATS (Business Language Testing Service).
